What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured or chronic areas. This treatment is highly effective for stubborn pain and conditions that haven’t responded to traditional care.
Our Shockwave Storz D-ACTOR® 200 utilizes advanced radial pressure wave technology (EPAT) and is a proven solution to treat a large array of acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain. Shockwave therapeutic device is used to reach an injured area at the cellular level to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. It can activate connective tissue, improve blood supply, decrease inflammation and temporarily relieve pain while recruiting and activating resident stem cells to the area.
What to Expect
The first appointment is a $95 introductory session, which we call a mapping session. We will do the initial consultation to learn about your health concern and then we’ll perform your first Shockwave treatment session. We will map out the area of concern to figure out where our focus needs to be during the sessions.
Dr. Mary will hold the patented Shockwave® applicator against your skin to administer a high-energy acoustic wave that penetrates deep into the body. These shockwaves are electro-hydraulically produced sound waves that exit the applicator at 3,355 miles per hour.
This creates a shearing force on a cellular level that helps break up scar tissue and remove oxidative stresses that have built up around the cell membrane. This tricks the body into thinking there is a new injury without damaging the tissue, but helps activate an innate healing response on a cellular level. It also decreases inflammation and pain at the treatment site. The total treatment time is just 5-10 minutes.
Patients who receive Shockwave have a quick recovery and enjoy long-lasting results. The therapy is non-invasive, and no anesthesia or numbing agents are needed. We also use the Shockwave as a diagnostic tool during your mapping session. When it is used over healthy tissue, there won’t be any discomfort. However, if you have an inflamed area, it will produce some discomfort. Dr. Mary will then determine whether you are a candidate for Shockwave and come up with a Complete Recovery Plan to provide you with long-term relief.
The best part is that research suggests this treatment stimulates your own stem cells within 45 minutes of this treatment. Stem cells are the repairmen of the body. This helps attract other helper cells and reset the body naturally. These repair and helper cells are signaled to come out over the next few weeks and start the healing process to the damaged tissue.
Typically, after the third treatment, we should see a 60-75% reduction in pain. After 8-12 treatments, we should have the maximum stem cell production that will continue to migrate and repair the tissue over the next 8-12 weeks. Research shows a success rate for musculoskeletal disorders of 65-91%.
